Student Meetings Cancelled 10/19

Unfortunately, Prof. Chin is ill, so today all student meetings for ENH 213 & ENL 440 are cancelled.

Students will meet in their regularly scheduled classrooms on Monday. You will be given instruction on the make-up meetings then. See homework (due Monday) for your class below.

ENH 213
Novella Carpenter's "Farm City" is due. Answer the following questions based on p.1-111:
1. Describe the opening chapter. Why does NC start the book this way? How would it have been different if she decided to start the narrative with Chapter 2 instead?
2. Who are the various characters/groups described in the first 3 Chapters?
3. List three of the biggest challenges to keeping an urban farm.
4. Who are Harold & Maude?

ENL 440
Write up a detailed pitch about your subculture (1 extensive paragraph). Try to include the 5 Ws of Journalism: who, what, when, where, why, and lastly, how? Include info on at least one-two people you will be interviewing. Remember, your subculture should be one in which you will have plenty of opportunities to do reporting. Events which you don't have access to cannot be covered and therefore are not appropriate for this assignment.

Jury Duty Finished

Prof. Chin has fulfilled her jury duty service. Students in ENH 213 and ENL 440 are expected to continue to work on their papers and oral presentations independently this week. If students in either course have questions, they can come to Prof. Chin's office where she will be keeping hours this Wednesday from 1pm-3.30pm, 2S-213.

She will see each of her classes in their regularly scheduled rooms on Monday Sept. 19th.

Welcome ENH 213 and ENL 440

Happy Fall 2011 semester!

Professor Chin will be on jury Sept. 12th and Sept. 14th (Mon. & Wed.)

ENH 213: The week of Sept. 12th, students will be working on their first paper assignment (see hand-out), due in class when Prof. Chin returns.

ENL 440: Advanced magazine writing students will be working together in pairs on their oral presentations. Students can pair-up during class time or divvy up the work on their own, but they are encouraged to get the bulk of their presentations done this week. Thumb's Up to The Power of Pink

CSI graduate Nicole Hyer's blog The Power of Pink received coverage in last week's Staten Island Advance. Former classmates and current CSI students interested in helping Nicole raise money for her "American Chopper" project to promote breast cancer awareness should contact Nicole at her blog.

Theater Reviews (and Most Reviews in General)

There's a lot of sleight-of-hand going on in theater/film/music reviews that readers take for granted, but which drive writers crazy. First, reviews need to be zippy and they need to kill. Like music criticism, they need to 1) inform us about the subject matter (in this case, the play) in a language appropriate to the genre and which doesn't put us to sleep 2) sufficiently address the cast, direction, music and scene staging (if extraordinary), history of the play (if it's a revival, etc.) 3) include any outstanding moments/performances. Afterwards, as readers we should get enough of a sense of the play that we can make up our own minds whether or not we want to see it. (This of course is a trick: the writer has cleverly shaped a story that enables readers to see only what s/he wanted us to).

For an example of great theater criticism that hits all these notes and more, take a look at NY Post's chief drama critic Elisabeth Vincentelli's theater reviews (and it's not just because she's my friend):
